Our research focusses on dendritic cells (DC) which are able to prime T lymphocytes in order to induce an antigen-specific immune response against viruses. We are interested on how DC acquire and process antigens for presentation on MHC molecules since these processes can be beneficial for the defense of HIV or Herpes simplex infection but detrimental during autoimmunity. We perform research on various aspects of HIV therapy. Specifically, we examine autophagy, an intracellular recycling mechanism which regulates immune cell function and can contribute to adverse drug reactions but may also be a valuable target for cancer therapy.
