A detailed understanding of allo- and xenogeneic immune responses is an important prerequisite for the development of novel strategies for therapeutic immunomodulation and tolerance induction. Studying patients after liver and kidney transplantation and applying models of xenotransplantation we characterize genetic factors that determine the intensity of anti-graft responses in the individual recipient. Furthermore, we develop concepts to diminish anti-graft responses by enhancing inhibitory signals in the recipient’s immune system.
