The Clinic for Orthodontics within the Center of Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Hannover Medical School (MHH) has existed since 1973.
Clinical performance spectrum
In the patient care of the clinic, the aim of the treatment is a prevention- and quality-oriented orthodontics. Every year, around 800 patients are treated by orthodontics. Orthodontics regards itself as a partner of the other three disciplines of dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, dental prosthetics and biomedical material science as well as tooth preservation, periodontics and preventive dentistry, as well as partners of various disciplines of medicine, in particular phoniatric and pediatric audiology, otorhinolaryngology and paediatrics. An example of this is the complex rehabilitation of patients with cleft lip and palate in the Interdisciplinary,
Other treatment focuses include:
- Orthodontic prevention
- functional therapy of dyskinesia-related dysgnathia
- Orthodontic treatment of children
- Adolescents and adults with removable and fixed appliances
- Treatment of patients with cranio-mandibular dysfunction in combination with dento-facial deformities
- Orthodontic-oral surgery of severe malocclusions
Depending on the indication, orthodontic treatments are performed at different times:
Early treatment in the dentition of the first dentition
This involves the early detection and treatment of such malocclusions that adversely affect jaw growth and dentition development. A typical example is the reverse overbite in the front or the lateral cross bite. Both malpositions can lead to pronounced asymmetries in the region of the lower jaw and thus the face when not treated. The orthodontic treatment is usually done with removable equipment or fixed partial appliances.
Orthodontic treatment in children in early and late mixed dentition
This is the main period for those treatments that use the patient's growth. Removable equipment, either plate apparatus or bimaxillary functional orthodontic appliances, as well as fixed appliances in the sense of multi-bracket appliances are used.
Orthodontic treatment in adolescents and adults in the dentition of the second dentition
In the foreground is the treatment of malocclusions, as after completion of the jaw growth usually no lasting influence on the skeletal bases is possible. The orthodontic treatment in the dentition of the second dentition is usually performed with fixed appliances. For severe dentofacial deformities, combined orthodontic-oral surgery is indicated. In the Clinic for Orthodontics, myofunctional therapy with lip and tongue exercises, the treatment with plate appliances as well as interdisciplinary therapies in the area of the treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate and severe skeletal related dysgnathia were already focal points of patient care from 1973 to 2002. These proven areas have been continuously expanded since 2002. From 2004, the lingual technique with an individual bracket system ("Incognito" according to Wiechmann) was established in the clinic.
Orthodontics and dentistry see themselves as cross-sectional compartment for the chewing organ. In research, teaching and health care, it should also be clear in the future that the four disciplines of the Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery can be regarded as an integral part of dentistry and medicine within a university hospital.
