Focus of research

Biliary atresia is a rare disease as it occurs in only one in 18,000 newborns. In Germany we therefore expect about 35 cases per year. Since most of these children will need, sooner or later, a liver transplant biliary atresia is the most common cause of liver transplantation in children today.
Our research group is investigating the immunological basis of this disease and is doing research on an animal model that we have validated.

The Pediatric Surgery Clinic of the MHH is a pediatric liver center, treating about 10-15 cases per year. Our research group has the unique opportunity to work with human material from operations.
