For MHH’s Inventors
Are you an MHH employee and have an idea for exploiting your research? Get into contact.
Department for Research Funding, Knowledge & Technology Transfer (OE 9110) | fwt2-wtt@mh-hannover.de
You made an invention? These are the next steps:
1. First talk to Dr. Ralf Cordes or Dr. Torben Söker (phone: +49 511 532-8921 | hannover@ascenion.de ), who are the contact persons at Ascenion Gmbh; to determine whether it makes sense to file an official notification of invention.
2. Complete the Notification of Invention form and send it to MHH’s legal department (OE 0400). The Notification of Invention form can be downloaded here: Notification of Invention
ATTENTION: It is essential to file a notification of invention before publishing in scientific papers, as otherwise it will no longer be possible to file a patent application.
3. You are notified as soon as the legal department has received your notification of invention, and a copy of the notification is forwarded to Ascenion for evaluation.
4. Ascenion evaluates the invention with regard to its patentability and possibilities of economic exploitation and gives a recommendation to the legal department as to whether the MHH should lay claim to the invention or not. During the evaluation, Ascenion will maintain close contact with you as the inventor.
5a. Once the MHH has released your invention, you can file a patent application at your own expense. The MHH will then no longer have a right to the invention.
5b. If the MHH chooses to claim the invention, the patent application process is started in close collaboration with an external patent lawyer. The expenses incurred for the patent application are borne by the MHH. The invention is protected starting from the date the patent application has been filed (retroactively, provided the patent has been granted).
6. Once the patent application has been filed, Ascenion arranges for the exploitation of the invention, e.g. by licensing it to companies, agreeing on cooperation with industry, or establishing an MHH spin-out company.
Important: All information in connection with an invention will be treated as strictly confidential by all stakeholders.

- In many cases, a patent is an important prerequisite for commercializing an invention. A patent gives the patent holder a competitive edge over competitors for a period of up to 20 years. By commercializing and subsequently putting an invention on the market, it will ultimately also be of benefit to the patients.
- If the MHH has claimed an invention, then it will assume responsibility for the full cost of the application and maintenance process. If the patent is exploited, the inventor is entitled to 30% of any gross revenue.
- If the inventor wants to exploit the patent in the form of a company start-up, this is taken into account and a fair agreement with the founders will be reached.
- Inventors are entitled to receive 30% of any gross revenue generated on the basis of a patent.
- In accordance with the German Employee Inventions Act, MHH employees are required to inform MHH’s legal department (OE 0400) in writing of any inventions made. Forms: Notification of Invention
- The MHH as the responsible institution is required to evaluate whether an invention was made in connection with the employee’s official job responsibilities or know-how.
- If the invention is job-related, the MHH itself may become the owner of the property rights and contracting partner of the respective licensee by claiming the invention.
