Working group PD Dr. med Anna Saborowski/ Prof. Dr. med. Arndt Vogel
Welcome to the working group of PD Dr. med. Anna Saborowski and Prof. Dr. med. Arndt Vogel . Here we would like to give you an insight into the subject matter of our working group. We would also like to introduce you to our staff and publications. Our scientific work focuses on questions concerning the molecular pathogenesis of tumor diseases. In particular, we are interested in the regulation of programmed cell death (apoptosis) and the proliferation of hepatocytes in the context of chronic liver diseases. This work is carried out in a variety of in vitro and in vivo models.
The group also develops and optimizes various protocols for the isolation and transplantation of murine and human hepatocytes in animal models and xenotransplantation models. The projects are currently funded by the German Research Foundation, the German Cancer Aid and the German-Israeli Foundation.
Every year, almost half a million people in Germany are diagnosed with cancer and one in four deaths in Germany is caused by these diseases. Especially for patients with advanced tumors in the gastrointestinal tract, there are hardly any curative drug therapy options available. However, enormous progress has been made in oncology in recent years by testing innovative forms of treatment and optimizing therapy in clinical trials. The scientifically controlled use of novel drugs in phase 1 to 3 trials is therefore a particular clinical focus. In addition, personalized therapy strategies are developed for tumor patients with advanced tumor diseases as part of interdisciplinary treatment concepts.
The introduction of new drugs has led to constantly rising costs in the healthcare system in recent years. As part of a BMBF-funded project, we are currently working with economists and health scientists at Leibniz Universität Hannover to investigate the costs and benefits of individualized medicine using the example of colorectal cancer.

Arndt Vogel is a senior consultant and W2 Professor of Gastrointestinal Oncology in the Clinical Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology at Hannover Medical School. He has been a specialist in internal medicine since 2009 and a specialist in internal medicine - gastroenterology since 2011. After studying medicine in Göttingen and completing his internship (AiP), he moved to Hannover Medical School as a junior doctor in 2000. After completing the first two years of his specialist training, he completed a two-year research stay at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, USA, as part of a DFG scholarship. His research focuses on understanding the fundamental processes of liver regeneration and tumor development.
