Three scientists from Hannover Medical School are among the most frequently cited researchers in the world: Professor Dr. Michael Manns, Professor Dr. Thomas Werfel and Professor Dr. Thomas Thum. This was the result of an analysis of scientific publications from 2010 to 2020 by the company Clarivate Analytics. The "Highly Cited Researchers" list, which is compiled annually, shows which publications in each discipline are among the one percent that have been cited the most. Results that scientists publish in scientific journals can be used by other researchers worldwide for their own work - if they mark them as citations in their own publications. In this context, both the number of citations serves as an indicator of scientific influence and the reputation of the journal in which the publication was made. Prof. Manns, Prof. Werfel and Prof. Thum are listed in the "Cross Fields" category, in which researchers have an impact on science beyond their actual field of work. The current list includes some 6,600 researchers from 21 disciplines in the natural, life and social sciences. The "Who's Who" of science also provides information on the countries and research institutions in which the scientific elite is working. More than 300 of these experts work in Germany.

The frequently cited MHH professors are:

Professor Dr. Michael Manns, President of the Hannover Medical School and former Director of the Clinic for Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology.

Professor Dr. Thomas Werfel, Head of the Research Division of Immunodermatology and Experimental Allergology of the Department of Dermatology, Allergology and Venereology

Professor Dr. Thomas Thum, Head of the Institute for Molecular and Translational Therapeutic Strategies and Head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine, ITEM.
