What is AVIATOR?

As part of the BMFTR-funded AVIATOR (AdVanced clIniciAn scienTist prOgram) program, the MHH is advertising positions for Advanced Clinician Scientists (each with 50% protected research time for up to 6 years). AVIATOR is a structured career development program to promote researching medical specialists who want to combine their clinical expertise with excellent translational research and establish themselves in academic medicine in the long term.
The program is aimed at ambitious Advanced Clinician Scientists in the R3 career phase who combine clinical experience with a high level of scientific expertise. Physicians with completed specialist training can apply.

Tasks and qualifications of the talents
As an Advanced Clinician Scientist in the AVIATOR program, you will take on a central role at the interface between clinical practice, research and academic development. This includes:
- Conducting an independent, translational research project with clinical relevance and societal impact in one of the three strategic research focus areas of the MHH
- Establishing and leading your own research group, including responsibility for personnel, resources and scientific planning
- Acquiring competitive third-party funding to further develop your scientific agenda and sustainably establish your group
- Integration into clinical care with a clearly defined clinical profile linked to your research activities
- Participating in structured qualification offerings as part of the program
- Active participation in mentoring, teaching and science communication, including Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) and Open Science
- Responsibility for the progress of your career development, accompanied by individual target agreements, regular evaluations and strategic coaching
- Participation in the further development of the program, including through participation in committees and exchange formats within the MHH and in a national/international context

Participation requirements
- Doctorate and completed specialist training
- Proven research experience corresponding to the R2 career phase
- Clinical activity with scientific ambition
- Clear scientific vision and willingness to actively shape your own research profile
- Motivation for scientific independence and the prospect of taking on leadership roles
- Interest in translational research in the sense of combining clinical, research and patient benefit
- Willingness to actively participate in AVIATOR as a career development program
Content and structure of career program
The program is specifically tailored to the needs of Advanced Clinician Scientists and offers:
- 50% protected research time for up to 6 years (3+3 years after positive interim evaluation)
- Individual career development plan with the aim of qualifying according to the R3 career phase in the field of translational medicine.
- Targeted mentoring & coaching
- Financial support: provision of personnel and material resources, assumption of travel and publication costs
- Support services for the efficient use of research structures located at the MHH, research data management and digital medicine, for strategic planning of patient and public participation and numerous other workshop offers.
- Measures for international networking

You will need the following documents to apply to AVIATOR:
- Application Advanced Clinician Scientist Program 1st Step (see template) with a description of your scientific vision and personal goals as an Advanced Clinician Scientist
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form with a description of previous research achievements and relevant clinical experience and milestones.
The selection is based on a two-stage process and takes into account individual scientific and clinical achievements, particularly in the context of the desired profile. Please only use the templates provided to enable an assessment in accordance with CoARA.
Note: For applicants with a foreign license to practice medicine, there is the possibility of funding for professional recognition.

- Brief summary of your scientific (and clinical) career
- Please indicate which scientific field you belong to and list the five most important journals in your field with the respective impact factors.
- List of publications with all authors, your name in bold, indication of citations
- List of third-party funding, indicating your individual contribution (both financial and scientific)
