The Pediatric Center for Cystic Fibrosis exists since 1976 and the Cystic Fibrosis outpatient clinic for adults in the Department of Pneumology since 1993. Approximately 200 children and adolescents  as well as 285 adult patients are treated here annually.

Since spring 2013, adolescents and adults with cystic fibrosis have been cared for in a joint outpatient clinic at Hannover Medical School in order to facilitate the transition of adolescents to adult medicine and to improve cooperation between the fields. Medical care is provided by pediatricians or physicians from the Department of Pneumology, depending on the age of the patients. Younger children will continue to be cared for on the premises of the Children's Hospital.

The outpatient clinic offers the entire spectrum of CF care from comprehensive diagnostics (sweat test, genetics, electrophysiological examinations such as intestinal short-current measurement (ICM) and nasal potential difference (nPD) measurement) to transplantation (lungs, liver).

The outpatient clinic regularly participates in national and international clinical trials. In addition, there are research interests in the field of molecular pathology and infectiology (Prof. Dr. Dr. B. Tümmler), in the field of airway inflammation (PD Dr. A. Dittrich), in the field of cystic fibrosis and sports (Dr. S. Junge) and in the field of difficult-to-treat infections caused by multi-resistant pathogens (PD Dr. F. Ringshausen). 

Both the CF outpatient clinic for children and adolescents and the outpatient clinic for adults are certified by the Mukoviszidose e.V.. The CF Center was awarded the Christiane Herzog Prize in 2005 for special achievements in patient care.

We participate in the quality assurance measures and the benchmarking project of MUKO e.V. for continuous quality improvement.
