Bauerfeind Lab

In collaboration with a number of virology labs inside and outside the MHH the lab works on the cell biology of Herpes viruses assembly with a strong focus on live cell fluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy.

The scheme illustrates the assembly pathways of Herpes viruses. In the nucleus of the host cell new virals capsids are assembled and the viral DNA is packaged. Capsids are transported through the nuclear envelope and reach the cytosol. They are transported along microtubles to membranes where the final envelopment takes place. Finally virions are release by exocytosis.
