Background and Objectives

The steadily increasing prevalence of neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders is a consequence of demographic ageing. At the same time, however, new possibilities for early diagnosis and personalised treatment are opening up thanks to biomarkers and disease-modifying therapies, particularly antibody therapies for Alzheimer’s disease. However, significant challenges remain in terms of our understanding of the underlying disease mechanisms and providing optimal care for affected patients.

The “Translational Neuropsychiatry of Aging” research group investigates neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders of old age—such as dementia and late-life depression—using a translational research approach. The focus is on identifying new biomarkers, investigating neuroimmunological and neurodegenerative mechanisms, and integrating clinical, neuropsychological, imaging, and molecular biological data. In addition, experimental models are used to investigate disease-relevant signaling pathways and develop new therapeutic approaches.

Another focus is on translational health services research. By analyzing clinical cohorts, registries, and real-world data, the research group investigates healthcare delivery systems, disease progression, and medication safety aspects in older adults. The goal is to develop evidence-based strategies for more precise diagnostics, personalized therapy, and a sustainable improvement in the care of patients with neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders.
