Managing Frailty. A comprehensive approach to promote a disability-free advanced Age in Europe: the ADVANTAGE initiative

Background to the initiative

35 organizations from 22 European member states have formed a joint action to prevent the emergence of frailty at a societal level.

Frailty plays a major role in an ageing European society. Every third to fourth older citizen is affected to varying degrees. Frailty should be taken so seriously because it leads to premature restrictions in mobility and everyday functions, the need for care, iatrogenic complications and a high mortality rate. Frailty and its progression can be prevented. However, a certain therapeutic nihilism persists in society because frailty is seen as physiological and unavoidable.

Hands and arms can be seen. The image suggests that this could be an elderly patient holding on to a rollator and being supported by a carer.

Aims of the initiative

The ADVANTAGE group pursues the following interrelated goals:

1. understand the nature of frailty

2. make recommendations on diagnostic and therapeutic options at societal and individual level

3. analyze country-specific development statuses with regard to prevention and management of frailty and develop roadmaps with health policy.

Funding

The project is funded by the EU Commission. The funding period runs from 01.01.2017 to 31.12.2019.
