MediQuit

The discontinuation of medication by general practitioners in elderly patients with polypharmacy

Background

Reducing medication for patients with polypharmacy is challenging. While disease-specific guidelines promote the initiation of medication, GPs cannot use these evidence-based decision aids when discontinuing medication.

Aims

In the first part of the project, we are investigating the rules according to which physicians reduce medication in cases of polypharmacy. To this end, we are interviewing general practitioners, specialists and patients. We are also compiling a systematic literature review on this topic. Based on this, a practical discontinuation decision aid for GPs will be developed in the second part of the project. In a third part, this decision aid will be subjected to a practical test.

MediQuit

MediQuit is an electronic decision aid for discontinuing medication. It can be used as an ARRIBA tool in consultations with patients. MediQuit will soon be tested in GP practices.
