Stress experience and health behavior in medical studies and continuing medical education
Background
Studies on psychosocial stress among medical students have come to the conclusion that the prevalence of mental illness among these students is higher than in the general population. In particular, the prevalence of depressive disorders and anxiety and dependency disorders is higher. In addition, an increased stress load and a higher prevalence of mental illness among young physicians, especially in primary care, has been shown.
The factors that lead to psychosocial stress are still unclear. Some studies indicate that the workload, difficulties with exams, financing a livelihood and psychological problems play a decisive role. In other studies, the lack of trusting relationships (e.g. partnership, friendships, small social network), self-doubt regarding career choice and competition were seen as relevant influencing factors.
Aims
The aim of this project is to record the perceived stress levels and associated coping patterns during medical studies and further medical training. The results will later be used to develop concrete intervention and action measures. The project also serves to critically reflect on the content of studies at Hannover Medical School as well as in continuing medical education and to be able to adapt it to future needs.
