Places of death

Analysis of the places of death of residents in the city and region of Hanover

Background

The wish of most people is to die in their familiar home environment. In order to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions and hospitalization of people at the end of life, numerous structures for outpatient palliative care have been established and further developed in Germany in recent years, which are intended to promote care in the home environment until the end of life.

To date, there has been no scientific analysis of the places (e.g. at home, in hospital, in a home) where people die in the city and region of Hanover.

Research question

The work focuses on researching the following questions:

  • In which places do people die in the city and region of Hanover?
  • What differences in the places of death can be identified between 2007 and 2017?

Methods

Slips of paper with partly colored diagrams lie on a table. A hand holding a pen can be seen at the back of the picture.

Data collection

In the course of this work, information on the place of death, the age and gender of the deceased and the documented cause of death is collected from death certificates. For the years 2007 and 2017, approx. 3500 death certificates are collected as a random sample from the city and region of Hanover.

Data analysis

The anonymized data is evaluated using descriptive statistics and frequency analyses with the help of SPSS statistical software.

Cooperation partner

The work is carried out in cooperation with the Department of Health - Hannover Region (Dr. Mustafa Yilmaz).
