Research
At the Institute of Laboratory Animal Science, we deal with issues relating to animal welfare and the standardization of laboratory animals in line with the 3Rs principle as well as the characterization of animal models, in particular for inflammatory bowel disease or diabetes mellitus.
The close links between the Institute and the Central Animal Laboratory enable biomedical research to be combined with laboratory animal science topics. Examples of this are the establishment of genetic examination methods, the significance of pathogens and the microbiome for laboratory animals, the hygienic sanitation and cryopreservation of rodent strains, the optimization of perioperative pain therapy and the evaluation of stress in animal experiments.
In addition, pathohistological and imaging methods as well as the expertise of all research groups in laboratory animal science allow for extensive phenotyping of animal models.
