Teaching

The courses offered by the Institute of Biometry consist of two components:

  • Basic course in medical biometry in Human medicine study programmes (MSE_P_304)

Using clinical studies as an example, the basic principles of statistics and medical biometrics, which are needed to understand the results of clinical research, are explained. The concepts presented are also important in order to then recognize statistical problems in the preparation of doctoral theses or scientific papers and to enter into dialogue with Institute staff.

  • Basic course in statistical analysis with SPSS

Nowadays, nobody will calculate a statistical test or a study analysis "by hand" outside of a statistics course, and it is also not worthwhile to write programs for statistical procedures yourself. Specialized software (SPSS and SAS) is available that covers all areas of statistical data analysis.

The Institute of Biometry offers SPSS courses, as the Institute cannot completely take over the statistical evaluation for all scientific work within the framework of general consulting, but must limit itself to statistically critical and interpretatively difficult evaluations. It is therefore helpful and occasionally necessary for the cooperation partners to be able to carry out the data preparation, description and basic statistical evaluations themselves. A solid basic knowledge of statistics and the ability to carry out evaluations yourself are valued additional qualifications in medicine.

The course repeats the basic concepts of statistics at a non-technical level, gives recommendations for data collection and, while getting to know the program, uses examples to repeat the elementary statistical procedures that should be familiar from medical studies. A further course segment deals with the modeling of observational data, which is important for many hypothesis-generating questions.
