Director of the Clinical Department of Nuclear Medicine

 

 


After completing his specialist training, habilitation and several years as a senior physician at the Clinical Department of Nuclear Medicine at the Technical University of Munich (Director: Prof. Dr. M. Schwaiger), Prof. Bengel was recruited by Johns Hopkins University, one of the world's leading medical institutions, in 2005. He worked there for 5 years in the Clinical Department and Research as Associate Professor of Radiology and Medicine and Director of Cardiovascular Nuclear Medicine before being appointed to the MHH, where he took up his post on January 1, 2011.

Prof. Bengel has done pioneering work in the development of imaging techniques for the visualization of molecular and cellular target structures and in the translation of early scientific findings into clinical practice. His work on the non-invasive visualization of biological systems and their relevance, in particular with positron emission tomography and on the model of the heart, has been published in high-ranking medical journals (including the "New England Journal of Medicine").

He has received various awards (including the Herrmann Blumgart Award of the Society of Nuclear Medicine 2011, the
Brahms Research Prize and the Tyco Healthcare Award of the German Society of Nuclear Medicine 2002), appears worldwide as a speaker and reviewer, is co-editor of 8 specialist journals (including the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, Journal of the American College of Cardiology), and holds/holds various honorary positions in imaging societies.
