Dr. Michael Sasse completed his medical studies at the University of Giessen. Following two years of training in the Clinical Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery at the Max Planck Institute in Bad Nauheim, he moved to the Pediatric Clinic at Hannover Medical School. Since 1999, he has been the senior physician in charge of the pediatric intensive care unit at the MHH and has been a training officer for pediatric intensive care medicine for many years.
As the founder of the Pediatric Intensive Care Network in Northern Germany (PIN), he has headed it since 2003. The network currently comprises 44 pediatric clinics and cares for more than 350 children with life-threatening illnesses per year. Mr. Sasse heads the Standardization Expert Council (SET) Infusion Management of the MHH. Its aim is to bring together and coordinate all Clinical Departments involved in infusion therapy.
In addition to his clinical work in the pediatric intensive care unit, his scientific focus is on infection and inflammation research and various areas of infusion management.
He heads the department's own Academy for Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine, which offers various course formats for further education and training in all areas of pediatric intensive care medicine. The GRC Course Center Hanover is affiliated with the Academy and offers around 30 pediatric emergency courses per year. He is the national course director of the European Council for Resuscitation's certified resuscitation courses.
For 6 years he was a member of the Ethics Committee of the MHH.
Dr. Michael Sasse is a member of the Society for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, the Society for Neonatology and Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine (GNPI), the German Interdisciplinary Society for Intensive Care Medicine (DIVI), the German Resuscitation Council (GRC), the German Sepsis Society (DSG) and European emergency and intensive care societies. For the DIVI, the GRC and the DSG, he is a long-standing member of the Presidium and the Scientific Advisory Board and acts as spokesperson for the pediatric sepsis working group. He is an expert for the Delphi Commission of the GNPI.
