From Leber-Schmidt and Tripper-Joe
On September 28, 2024, there was a big hello at the MHH: almost 100 golden and silver graduates celebrated their reunion with the MHH. Ten of them had graduated in 1974, the others had completed their studies in 1999. However, they hardly differed in their curiosity about a varied day at MHH.
Most of the alumni arrived early in the afternoon to be shown around the site by current MHH students. They were shown various exercise scenarios in the modern skills lab, visited the largely unchanged preparation room and visited the former student café, which is still a student meeting place today as a "living room". They also exchanged ideas with the young students and compared today's studies with the structures of the past.
After the guided tours, there was plenty of opportunity for discussions and anecdotes from the student days at the get-together. A whole series of group selfies were also taken in the cheerful hustle and bustle. In the late afternoon, Alumni Chairman Prof. Dr. Siegfried Piepenbrock welcomed those present to the official part of the event in lecture hall F, before Dean of Studies Prof. Dr. Ingo Just gave an entertaining talk explaining how medical training has changed over the last few decades.
In her speech, Dr. Gilta Machleidt described the selection process at MHH, which was unusual at the time. When she began her studies in 1968, the selection committees were more interested in the personality of the applicants than their A-level grades. "In addition to individual interviews, the decisive factor was a group discussion in which we discussed what a fair selection procedure for admission to the MHH might look like," says Machleidt. The interaction between students and lecturers was also very respectful during their studies, even if the nicknames for some lecturers - above all "Leber-Schmidt" and "Tripper-Joe" - did not always suggest this. Prof. Dr. Kolja Schiltz, who took to the lectern for the silver graduating class, spoke about his alma mater with a similar mixture of humor and respect. Former Federal Minister Dr. Philipp Rösler, who also completed his medical studies at MHH 25 years ago and is now a member of the University Council here, summed it up in his speech: "Thank you for the great education!"
The ceremonial presentation of the anniversary certificates by MHH President Prof. Dr. Michael Manns completed the program, which was musically framed on this day by the Hanoverian formation Smith & West. Under the motto "Somehow the Beatles", Uli Schmid and Michael J. Westphal played their way into the hearts of the audience. Those who closed their eyes were able to indulge in the illusion of John Lennon and Paul McCartney for a moment and hum "Penny Lane" to themselves for a while during the concluding dinner in the Campus Bistro.
