Locations of the medically staffed ambulances of the anesthesiology department of the MHH
On peak days, our Clinical Department dispatches up to 6 emergency physicians at the same time:
- NEF Langenhagen
- NEF DRK 1
- NEF DRK 2
- ITW 24h
- ITH
- LNA
You can find a map with all rescue stations in the Hannover region on the website of the Hannover Fire Department.
Emergency ambulance (NEF) Langenhagen
The NEF "Akkon Hannover 32-82-1" is deployed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in cooperation with the North Hanover branch of the Johanniter Unfallhilfe. The Johanniter provide the vehicle, which carries medical equipment and medication that exceeds the regional standard, and the emergency paramedic, who drives the vehicle and supports the emergency doctor at the scene. Rescue service is teamwork.
Almost 3,000 missions are completed every year. Langenhagen is the training focus for prospective emergency physicians from our clinic, but also from other hospitals and Clinical Departments of the MHH. As a result, there is very often a second physician on the vehicle alongside the experienced emergency physician in training. We currently train around 20 new emergency doctors every year!
Due to the tactically clever location of the rescue station at the intersection between the A2 and A352 freeways and its location on the outskirts of the city, the operational area is very large and the operational requirements are correspondingly varied.
Cooperation was first established (1984) by colleagues from the department who provided the emergency doctor service in their free time. Since 1996, the provision of an emergency doctor on weekdays between 06:45 and 17:00 was contractually regulated. Since 1998, the NEF Langenhagen has been staffed all day by employees of the anesthesiology department of the MHH.

Other NEF locations
In addition to the cooperation in Langenhagen, there has been a cooperation with the DRK in the Hannover region since 2011.
Emergency doctors from our Clinical Department are regularly deployed at the emergency doctor locations in Laatzen and Lehrte.
As part of the cooperation, one of these locations is staffed by a colleague from our Clinical Department every weekday during the day. In addition, another colleague is on duty at one of the locations for 24 hours on two days and for one day on another day.

Intensive care ambulance (ITW)
The intensive care ambulance (91-87-10) of Johanniter Unfallhilfe, based in Hanover, is also staffed around the clock by doctors. Its area of operation covers the whole of Lower Saxony.
Due to far-reaching structural changes in the healthcare system, it is becoming increasingly necessary to transfer seriously ill patients from one Clinical Department to another. This may be in order to provide the patient with more specialized therapy or to transfer the patient back to the sending hospital close to home or to a special rehabilitation clinic after completing special treatment.
Here it is not only possible to continue the complete complex intensive care treatment without any gaps, but also to further optimize the measures already taken in the sending hospital. For this purpose, we only use experienced anesthetists in our intensive care units.

Intensive care transfer helicopter (ITH) "Christoph Niedersachsen"
Since August 2009, the Clinical Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine has been coordinating the medical management of the intensive care transport helicopter (ITH) "Christoph Niedersachsen" in cooperation with DRF Luftrettung. The helicopter is stationed at Hanover Langenhagen Airport and is on standby 24 hours a day, i.e. around the clock. In addition to this location, there is only one other helicopter in Lower Saxony, Christoph 26 in Sanderbusch, which can take on night missions. To make this possible, all pilots are trained in the use of night vision equipment and have instrument flight licenses. For night missions, the team consists of an emergency doctor and paramedic as well as two pilots; during the day there is only one pilot. The helicopter used in Hanover is always the latest model, currently the Airbus H145.
"Christoph Niedersachsen" is the only helicopter in the whole of Lower Saxony to carry out vital intensive care transports of patients between Clinical Departments. It also flies with incubators and ECMO teams as well as primary missions.
The helicopter is requested for intensive care transports by hospitals or control centers via the Hanover coordination center of the state of Lower Saxony (Tel. 0800 112 112 5). The lead time for intensive care transports is 15 minutes during the day and 30 minutes at night after the mission has been confirmed. On average, around 900 missions are flown each year. Of these, around 25-30 percent are emergency missions (primary missions), for which "Christoph Niedersachsen" is alerted during the day if other rescue helicopters are unavailable. At night, "Christoph Niedersachsen" is the only helicopter for primary missions outside the East Frisian islands.
In accordance with the demanding tasks that have to be mastered at this workplace, only experienced specialists in anesthesiology with the additional qualification of special anesthesiological intensive care medicine, the additional qualification of Emergency Medicine and other additional qualifications are deployed here.

Leading Emergency Physician Group Hanover (LNA Group)
A senior emergency physician is always deployed in the region if more than five patients (MANV-5) need to be treated at an emergency site or if more than two emergency physicians are deployed. Two senior emergency physicians are on duty on a voluntary basis every day; they are alerted via digital radio message receivers if necessary and are picked up by an emergency vehicle and taken to the emergency site.
The LNA is always assisted by an officer from the professional fire department of the state capital of Hanover (B-Dienst) as the organizational head of the rescue service. In the Hanover region, a specialist advisor from the local aid organization who is familiar with regional conditions also supports the B-Dienst. Two senior emergency doctors are on call every day.
A total of six doctors from the Clinical Department (PD Dr. Eismann, Dr. Friedrich, Dr. Möller, Dr. Reiffen, Dr. Sieg and Dr. Temps) participate in the joint leading emergency doctor service of the state capital and the Hanover region. A further 10 physicians, all of whom are also qualified as LNAs, are active in the LNA supplementary group, which is deployed in addition to the regular rescue service from the alarm level "MANV-10" (over 20 injured persons). In total, the LNA group consists of 22 senior emergency physicians and the supplementary group consists of 32 other colleagues.
