Pain outpatient clinic
Your treatment in the outpatient pain clinic
When you first contact us, we will review and evaluate the available findings and previous treatment methods. We complete our diagnosis with a physical and psychometric examination.
If necessary for the diagnosis, we will initiate further measures, e.g. imaging, laboratory tests or diagnostic nerve blocks. In principle, there is also the possibility of interdisciplinary evaluation of your complaints.
Our treatment concept is multimodal. We use psychotherapeutic, physical, complementary medical, interventional and pharmacological therapy methods. Intensive follow-up and support are a matter of course for us.
Our aims
- Formulation of an accurate diagnosis
- Change in the intensity of pain
- Deconditioning and desensitization of the existing pain
- Guidance on how to deal with the symptoms in a responsible and rehabilitative manner
Chronic pain
The pain itself can become a disease, although a recognizable physical cause is not or no longer present. As we know today, a large proportion of these pain syndromes can be traced back to so-called neuroplastic changes in the nervous system.
Specialized nerve cells undergo a "learning process" similar to the changes in nerve cells that are active during learning processes (long-term potentiation). Stimuli that previously caused little or no pain are then perceived as pain due to the altered information processing of the now more sensitive nerve cells ("pain memory").
Such sensitization processes can extend from the periphery to the central nervous system and are often associated with dysfunctional changes in other endogenous networks, such as the autonomic nervous system and the immune system.
Factors that can set such neurobiological mechanisms in motion are long-lasting pain stimuli, high pain intensities and nerve injuries and, on the part of those affected, a deficiency or malfunction of the body's own pain defense system, the functionality of which is not only genetically determined but also depends on individual physical and psychological development processes.
The chronic pain that becomes "ingrained" in this way often affects the entire person concerned, with far-reaching psychosocial consequences (e.g. job loss, isolation, depression).
A holistic biopsychosocial approach must be taken to successfully treat such a situation.
