Prof. Dr. Michael P. Manns - Academic memorial service

On Saturday, November 22, 2025, an academic memorial service for our former clinic director, Prof. Dr. Michael Peter Manns, was held in Lecture Hall F of the Hannover Medical School. Numerous colleagues from nearly five decades of his professional career attended the event. The ceremony was moderated by Dr. Jennifer Debarry (CiiM), Prof. Dr. Markus Cornberg, and Prof. Dr. Heiner Wedemeyer.

After welcoming remarks, including from Falko Mohrs, Lower Saxony's Minister of Science and Culture, several rounds of discussions highlighted various facets of Michael Manns' impressive scientific and clinical life's work. Dr. Andrea Schneider and Dr. Friederike Klein from our clinic were among those who actively contributed to the discussions.

Of particular note was the keynote speech by Prof. Tom Karlsen from the University of Oslo, who worked closely with Michael Manns for many years. More recently, the two were united in particular by their involvement in the EASL–Lancet Commission, which highlighted the enormous health policy significance of liver disease in Europe and worldwide. This work was a deeply personal concern for Michael Manns until the last days of his life. He will be listed as the senior author of the groundbreaking publication, which is scheduled to appear in the first quarter of 2027 in The Lancet.

At the end of the memorial service, two particularly impressive speeches added emotional and personal touches. Sigmar Gabriel, former Minister-President of Lower Saxony, Federal Minister, and Vice-Chancellor, paid tribute to Michael Manns' work. Dr. Johanna Rieder, Michael Manns' eldest daughter, expressed her gratitude on behalf of the family with moving words for the great sympathy and also for the support and care her father received at our clinic.
