The great cookbook for the liver

Liver diseases, especially fatty liver disease, are becoming increasingly common - but they can be positively influenced by an appropriate diet. A healthy and appropriate diet is therefore extremely important for those affected. It can significantly improve the state of health of those affected; in the case of fatty liver disease, it can even contribute to a cure. For this reason, the German Liver Foundation has published "The big cookbook for the liver", which can help those affected to eat properly.

The cookbook is aimed at anyone interested in a healthy liver diet. In particular, people with fatty liver (disease), liver cirrhosis, haemochromatosis, Wilson's disease or after a liver transplant will find important information and numerous recipes for a needs-based diet. It was created in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team including dieticians, nutritionists and physicians.

The book begins by explaining the structure and vital functions of the liver in a generally understandable way. The most important liver values, which are usually used to detect liver disease, are also included.

The chapter "Basic rules for nutrition" describes the principle of a liver-healthy diet, explains the food pyramid and goes into detail about the body's energy balance, which is largely regulated by the liver. This is followed by a list of nutrients - protein, fat, carbohydrates, probiotics, fiber and micronutrients - and their importance for health. Finally, other areas of nutrition such as plant substances and coffee, which can support and protect liver function, are discussed.

The "Disease patterns of the liver" are then described. These include fatty liver disease, Wilson's disease, haemochromatosis, cholestatic liver disease (gallstone disease, primary biliary cholangitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis) and liver cirrhosis. In these chapters, the causes, symptoms and treatments of the diseases are explained and the connection to nutrition is established in each case. Liver transplantation is also discussed in detail - also with a strong reference to nutrition.

The entire theoretical section is heavily illustrated. Numerous specially produced illustrations illustrate the explanations and contribute to understanding and reading pleasure. Many tables clearly summarize additional information.

The practical section begins with numerous general cooking tips. Various daily menu plans provide orientation for the practical implementation of the nutritional recommendations and for the appropriate combination of recipes.

The 122 liver-healthy recipes offer different breakfast ideas, various soups and numerous main meals. Special emphasis has been placed on snacks. There are also recipes for pastries (from sweet to savory) and drinks.

The compilation shows that a liver-healthy diet can taste very good. Numerous photos taken especially for this book also whet the appetite. All recipes contain step-by-step instructions and information on the most important nutritional values. For each recipe, symbols are used to quickly and clearly identify which diseases it is suitable for. Kitchen tips are often added.

A recipe index and a keyword index make it possible to search for specific information, a disease or a recipe.

Here you will find a reading sample (with table of contents).
