Scientific focus

In a university clinic, research is an outstanding focus of work and the Clinical Department of Haematology, Haemostaseology, Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation is involved in a large number of preclinical and clinical studies and is a study center itself. The leading participation in the following structures and networks should be emphasized:

  • Diagnostic and Therapy Center of the AMLSG Study Group (AMLSG)
  • Center of the German MPN Study Group (GSG-MPN)
  • Center of the German CML Study Group
  • Competence Network "Acute and Chronic Leukemias", which aims to establish a world-leading cooperative leukemia network for the improvement of population-based care and health-related research in acute and chronic leukemias. The network includes all major study groups in Germany currently involved in leukemia (MPN, AML, CML, ALL, MDS) research and care improvement.

A particular focus of clinical research activities in hematological and solid tumor diseases is the systematic testing of new antineoplastic substances (so-called phase I/early phase II trials) and the disease-oriented testing of new therapy concepts (so-called phase II/III trials) for a wide range of tumor types. The Department participates in all major international studies in the field of congenital blood coagulation disorders. In particular should be mentioned: the evaluation of new recombinant coagulation factor concentrates, which are produced completely free of human and animal proteins. In addition, projects on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and quality of life are being implemented in the field of MPN diseases.

Furthermore, preclinical, experimental basic research and translational research are an essential part of our research profile. Research focuses are:

- DFG-, EU-, Cancer Aid- and Federal Ministry of Education and Research-funded projects in the following diseases: Myeloproliferative neoplasms (Heidel, Schnöder, Perner, Behrens), acute leukemias (Thol, Perner, Eder, Scherr, Heidel, Schnöder), cell and immunotherapy (Schultze-Florey, Könecke), clonal changes in hematopoiesis (CHIP) (Thol, Panagiota, Heidel), plasma cell diseases (Brioli), hematological transplantation medicine (Mischak-Weissinger), immunotherapy for solid tumor diseases (Ivanyi) and coagulation disorders (Tiede, Werwitzke). The aforementioned research focuses on aspects of mutation analysis (modern sequencing methods including single cell analysis), signal transduction, translational epigenetics, immunophenotyping and functional analysis in animal models).

- The research group 5659 "TARGET-MPN" (spokesperson: Prof. Dr. F. Heidel) and the Emmy Noether Junior Research Group "Translational Epigenetics" (Dr. F. Perner) are funded as excellence projects by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
