For physicians
HTTG Surgery at Hannover Medical School offers its residents exceptional career options. The Clinical Department's surgical spectrum ranges from simple standard procedures to the most complex, innovative and difficult operations currently available in the fields of cardiac, thoracic, transplant and vascular surgery. This extreme variety of surgical therapies gives young physicians an incomparable insight into the frontiers of medicine on a daily basis. In addition, hardly any other university hospital treats such seriously ill patients as the MHH, which is reflected in an annual casemix index that is unparalleled in Germany. These critically ill patients pose a very special challenge to the quality of treatment provided by the service providers in our Clinical Department. For patients, this brings with it the certainty that they are in good hands at the MHH with both mild and severe illnesses. For physicians and nurses alike, their daily work under the highest level of medical responsibility means that they are well equipped for almost any clinical picture in their professional lives, even outside the MHH.
Structured further training
In the Clinical Department for HTTG Surgery, further training authorizations for cardiac, thoracic, vascular and basic surgery are available. In accordance with each resident's own career goal, all opportunities for further training in these subjects are therefore available. As part of their specialist training, the residents undergo a rotation that is adapted to the content of the specialist they are aiming to become. In this way, each assistant also gets to know the neighboring areas and acquires special knowledge and skills in the course of these 6 or 12-month rotations, without losing sight of their actual training objective. A cardiac surgeon from Hanover therefore also has vascular surgery, thoracic surgery and intensive care medicine skills.
Focusing on core competencies
At HTTG Surgery, the focus on medicine is greatly supported for a junior physician. On the normal wards, for example, daily blood sampling and administrative activities are supported by two ward assistants. In addition, the MHH employs documentation assistants who professionally handle the coding of medical services for the physicians. Finally, the conduct of clinical studies in the Clinical Department is organized, supported and professionalized by numerous study nurses and study documentalists.
Personal working conditions
The aim of the clinic management of HTTG Surgery at the MHH is to create the best possible working conditions for all employees. The logic behind this is that employees who find a good infrastructure and smooth processes are not only motivated and feel comfortable at work, but that they also make fewer system-based medical errors in an optimal working environment. At HTTG, these conditions are achieved through structures that extend to all areas of infrastructure and process design. Perfect working conditions lead to more effective work. The well-known parable of the woodcutter with the blunt axe, who has no time to sharpen his tools because he still has a large mountain of wood to cut, can be reduced to the following formula for the HTTG Surgery Clinical Department: At the Clinical Department of HTTG Surgery, we grind the tools for our physicians and Nursing staff.
The conducive and comfortable working conditions at HTTG allow for very effective work in the Clinical Department, research and teaching. The high number of specialist physician approvals and habilitations in recent years reflect the effectiveness of this system.
In addition to their high level of medical competence and scientific expertise, surgeons from the MHH have also acquired good economic and social skills as part of their further training: The intensive daily cooperation with our partner departments and the basic courses in business administration offered at the MHH for senior physicians provide the necessary tools for management tasks. The frequent appointment of our senior physicians to leading positions in national and international surgical clinics in turn guarantees good career opportunities for assistant physicians within the Clinical Department.
