Vascular surgery

PD Dr. Thomas Aper

The range of services offered by the Clinical Department for HTTG covers the entire spectrum of open and endovascular vascular surgery, including the use of extracorporeal circulation and interventional treatments (performed via vascular catheters), such as the placement of stents.

We regularly carry out surgical treatment of blood vessels in the arterial system, such as the removal of occlusions in the carotid artery, reconstruction of the aorta, pelvic, renal and leg arteries, the creation of bypasses of all kinds and decompression procedures for TOS (thoracic outlet syndrome) and have a great deal of experience in this area. This also applies to the treatment of varices (varicose veins) and chronic venous insufficiency. We offer a complete range of therapies in this area. The removal of thrombi in the pelvic and leg veins with PTA / stent implantation and lysis therapy is also part of our treatment spectrum.

Surgical and interventional treatment of venous valve disorders and the replacement of deep veins and the vena cava system are part of our extensive range of services. We also perform dialysis fistulas, shunts and venous access systems (ports). We have particular expertise in the treatment of infected vascular prostheses, in which preserved human prostheses (homografts) are used.

Main areas of treatment

  • Endovascular procedures, e.g. implantation of thoracic and abdominal endoprostheses for aortic aneurysms and dissections
Reconstructive procedures in the arterial system, e.g. thrombendarterectomies of the carotid arteries, operations on the supraaortic vessels, replacement of the aorta, reconstruction of the iliac and leg arteries (Y prosthesis), bypasses below the knee joint
  • Creation of renal and visceral bypasses
Decompression procedures for thoracic outlet syndrome or popliteal entrapment
  • Complex replacements in the area of the vena cava for tumor diseases
  • Vascular surgery in children
  • Treatment of infected vascular prostheses or prosthetic-intestinal fistulas using cryopreserved human allografts (homografts) and when performing recurrent procedures
  • Application of extracorporeal perfusion procedures for organ protection in e.g. supra- and perirenal aortic aneurysms
  • Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), peripheral and central stent implantation (including carotid stenting, recanalization of the iliac arteries)
  • Endovascular aortic stent implantation thoracic, thoracoabdominal, infrarenal, including debranching and hybrid procedures as well as fenestrated and branded stent grafts
  • Creation of dialysis shunts/fistulas (including interventions) and implantation of indwelling catheters
