The ENT Clinical Department at Hannover Medical School has been dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant tumors of the entire head and neck area for decades. In particular, this includes diseases of the larynx, pharynx and oral cavity, including tumors of the major salivary glands. On the one hand, the tumor disease requires a great deal of surgical experience and, on the other hand, we place great value on interdisciplinary cooperation with other departments. The diagnostics and therapy carried out are standardized and adapted to the guidelines of the German Cancer Society.
Further information is also available on the website of our Head and Neck Tumor Center here at the MHH.
On the website of the Comprehensive Cancer Center CCC Hannover (Claudia von Schilling Center) you will find further offers, for example on the topics of naturopathic offers, psychooncology, sports therapy, nutritional medicine, oncological specialist care, podcast Corona and cancer and much more.
During our first contact, we attach particular importance to a detailed consultation in a personal meeting with our medical staff from our "tumor team". For an exact diagnosis, an endoscopy and determination of the extent of the tumor disease is usually necessary. For this purpose, you will be admitted as an inpatient and an endoscopy of the trachea, oesophagus and throat will be performed.
During our tumor conference, all findings are discussed together with colleagues from radiotherapy, oncology and radiology and an individual therapy is determined, which is then explained to you in a detailed discussion.
If surgical treatment is planned, you will be admitted as an inpatient as soon as possible (station 36b). Here, we will discuss all important matters relating to changes in speech and swallowing with you again. We work closely with self-help groups, which can provide very helpful advice from patient to patient.
In the event of definitive radiotherapy or combined radiochemotherapy (e.g. in the case of inoperability), we will refer you directly to the Clinical Department of Radiotherapy and Special Oncology, where the therapy will be carried out in close cooperation and interdisciplinary collaboration with our clinic.
Aftercare is provided by our outpatient clinic.
The surgical procedures used are primarily aimed at preserving the function of the organ in question, but always with a view to complete removal of the malignant tumor. Modern surgical procedures are available to us: Laser surgery, navigation-assisted surgery (CAS), intraoperative sonography.
Surgical treatment alone is often not sufficient, particularly in the case of lymph node involvement, so that combined radio/chemotherapy should be added. We will then advise you on this in cooperation with the Clinical Department for Radiotherapy.
As part of international studies, we can also offer new therapy options based on substances that specifically intervene in tumor growth.
The Kopf-Hals-M.U.N.D.-Krebs e.V. association now has an app to inform those affected about head, neck and mouth cancer.
The app is divided into a public and an internal area.
In the public area of the app you will find forums in which those affected, physicians and medical professionals as well as relatives can inform themselves and contribute content.
The internal area of the app offers the specific opportunity to find people with the same condition and to network with them.
If you have any questions or suggestions about the app, please contact the head, neck and mouth cancer self-help network.
