Definition
Transfusions can cause short-term or long-term adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Short-term adverse effects, which occur within minutes to a few days, are summarized under the term transfusion reaction. Long-term adverse effects include transfusion siderosis, transfusion-associated infections and transfusion-associated GvHD.
Adverse event
All complications, even if a connection with the use of blood products is not immediately apparent.
Suspected adverse event
Prompt connection of the side effect with the administration of blood products, cause of the side effect by the administration of blood products probable.
Suspicion of a serious adverse reaction
The side effect is fatal or life-threatening, leads to incapacity to work or disability, results in hospitalization or prolongation of hospitalization.
