Doing a doctorate at the Institute

Note:

  • Due to the numerous doctoral theses currently being supervised at the Institute, it is unfortunately not possible for us to accept further dissertation projects in the field of medical history. We ask for your understanding.

Students, scientists and physicians can complete a doctorate at our Institute on topics related to the history of medicine or medical/research ethics (medical students and physicians: doctorate to Dr. med. or Dr. med. dent.; other subjects: doctorate to Dr. rer. biol. hum. or Dr. PH [Public Health]).
Our Institute does not directly assign topics for dissertations. The topic is chosen jointly on the basis of the research interests of the prospective student and the feasibility of the dissertation project.

We would therefore like to ask those interested in writing a dissertation to find out more about the three working groups at our Institute via the website in order to narrow down the topic and thus the possible supervisors. In addition, ongoing dissertations or dissertations that have already been completed can also provide information on possible topics. We also encourage you to independently research initial literature on a possible topic and to find out about the respective subject area in advance.

For future doctoral candidates at our Institute (students of Human medicine at the MHH), we also recommend prior participation in the subject History, Theory and Ethics of Medicine (GTE) with as much success as possible.

If you are interested in writing a dissertation, please send an e-mail with your details (address, study programs, degree, etc.) to Ms. Britta Sander.
