Prof. Dr. Manfred Pflanz (1967-1980)

Prof. Dr. Dr. Manfred Pflanz (* 1923; † 27 July 1980) was the first Chair of Epidemiology and Social Medicine at the newly founded Hannover Medical School in 1967 and headed the Institute until his death in 1980.

As a conceptual thinker and scientist, Manfred Pflanz was a key protagonist in the establishment and development of social medicine and medical sociology in the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1961, he habilitated in internal and psychosomatic medicine and became the first associate professor of social medicine at the University of Giessen in 1966.
