Background and objectives

The professional field of nursing is undergoing a digital transformation. Due to demographic change, the number of people requiring care is increasing, while at the same time there is a shortage of qualified nursing professionals. Digitalization in nursing, however, offers new opportunities through the implementation of care technologies. The Cluster “Future of Nursing”, consisting of a Nursing Innovation Center (PIZ) and four Centers for Implementing Nursing Care Innovations (PPZ) in Berlin, Freiburg, Hanover, and Nuremberg, has demonstrated that these technologies can be effective under certain conditions across diverse care settings. Nevertheless, the potential of care technologies remains largely untapped in nursing practice.

In its second funding phase, the Cluster “Future of Nursing” positions itself as a joint transfer and innovation hub to ensure continued research, development, and dissemination of nursing technologies, as well as the transfer of experience and results to other facilities and institutions throughout Germany.

The motivation for the Center for Implementing Nursing Care Innovations in Hanover (PPZ-Hannover) stems from the fact that it remains unclear how technological innovations can be effectively and sustainably transferred to different care settings, and how promoting and inhibiting factors influence this process. The PPZ-Hannover team not only investigates care pathways and implementation processes but also examines the benefits of nursing technologies, the development of caregivers’ digital competencies, and the economic implications of new technologies. The project aims to facilitate and accompany the transfer of technological innovations to various healthcare facilities, which will subsequently act as multipliers.

Networking with relevant (international) stakeholders is planned. For example, PPZ-Hannover will contribute to the development and maintenance of a research database designed to reach nursing and research institutions outside the cluster and support their digital transformation through templates and guidelines. Drawing on its extensive experience in researching technological innovations and their practical implementation, PPZ-Hannover will provide valuable content for this database.
