Teaching LOM
The performance-oriented allocation of funds (LOM) is an instrument used by the university to improve the quality of teaching. The distribution of quality-based bonus payments is intended to create a financial incentive to further optimize teaching in the HannibaL model degree program.
The MHH distributes the sum of one million euros available for the medicine study program as follows:
- 95 percent for the quality of the courses
- 5 percent for lecturer prizes.
The quality of teaching is reflected by three criteria, which are recorded using a points system: the student evaluation of the overall course (grade for the module), the quality of the final module examination and the scope of teaching (teaching volume). The final examination is an integral part of the course. It should be fair and differentiated according to performance. The quality of the examination contributes to the overall quality of the module. The modules are ranked according to the total number of points achieved; the modules in the top third each receive an LOM share, whereby the teaching volume is taken into account in the size of the LOM amount. As most of the modules in the HannibaL model degree program are interdisciplinary, the LOM amount must be broken down by Department. The share is calculated according to the number of lecturer hours that each Department/Clinical Department has contributed to the module.
This concept, which at first glance appears difficult, reflects the difficulty of quantifying teaching quality, but the different parameters also guarantee a balanced and fair representation of teaching quality.
The teaching awards are determined by a survey of students. The students vote on who they consider to be the best lecturer of the previous academic year. For each of the five academic years, the three best lecturers are awarded the teaching prize based on this survey. The Young Teacher Award is also presented.
