Histology/cytology

In histology, tissue samples are fixed, ultra-thin sections are prepared and stained in order to determine the tissue structures and their

pathological changes '

(inflammations, tumors) under the microscope and detect them using immunohistological methods.

In cytology, cell smears are stained and microscopically pre-sampled, e.g. in gynecological cancer screening

.

Clinical chemistry

In clinical chemistry, body fluids (e.g. blood and urine) are analyzed for their chemical components and composition in order to draw conclusions.

composition in order to draw conclusions about organic diseases.

This department mainly carries out diagnostic analyses using automation techniques.

Technical interest is required here in particular

Examples

  • Blood sugar analysis for the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus
  • Determination of heart attack parameters.

Hematology/immunohematology

In hematology, blood cells are examined and their pathological changes detected, e.g. leukemia and anemia. In addition to the classic analysis procedures, methods from molecular biology are also used. Abnormalities and disorders in blood coagulation are also examined.

In immunohaematology, blood grouping and other tests for blood donations and blood transfusions are carried out.

Microbiology

In microbiology, sample material is examined for pathogens (e.g. bacteria, fungi, viruses). The microorganisms are cultivated, identified and tested for their sensitivity to antibiotics, and molecular biological methods are used to identify pathogens in addition to the classic examination methods.

Infection serology is used to examine the formation of antibodies in the blood as a reaction of the immune system to an infection.
