Stroke Unit

Ward 43c

The Stroke Unit of the Neurological Department of Hannover Medical School is certified as a "Supraregional Stroke Unit" (stroke specialty unit) with 12 beds. Around 1,200 patients with acute strokes are cared for there each year by an interprofessional team of physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists and social workers with experience in stroke medicine. Acute diagnostics and therapy are carried out in close cooperation with the Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology with the support of the Clinical Department of Anesthesiology, whereby, in view of the motto "Time is brain", it is everyone's concern to be able to start therapy in the shortest possible time. In addition to drug therapy, mechanical reopening of the vessels using the latest catheter systems is also available "around the clock" (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) to reopen blocked cerebral vessels. If necessary, cerebral hemorrhages are treated together with colleagues from the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery.

In addition to acute treatment, clarification of the cause is of particular importance, as this is the only way to take the necessary steps to prevent another stroke (secondary prevention). Our colleagues from various Departments of Internal Medicine, in particular Cardiology and Angiology, and the vascular surgeons are always available as competent contacts, even for the more difficult cases, so that we can develop treatment options in interdisciplinary case conferences.

Interdisciplinary exchange also takes place monthly at the Neurovascular Conference.

We conduct research on the subject of stroke and take part in therapy studies so that we can offer our patients the opportunity to participate in the development of the latest treatment methods in addition to standard therapies.
