Laboratory for Biomechanics and Biomaterials (LBB)
The Laboratory for Biomechanics and Biomaterials (LBB) is the research laboratory of the Orthopaedic Department of Hannover Medical School.
Medical Director: Prof. Dr. med. Henning Windhagen
Laboratory Director: Prof. Dr. med. Christof Hurschler
The research focus is on experimental and clinical implant technology. The LBB was founded in 1989 by Prof. Dr. med. C. J. Wirth and has been headed since 2000 by Prof. Dr. med. Hurschler since 2000. The laboratory offers an open portal for scientific transfer. This is reflected in the many national and international research collaborations. The LBB is a certified network laboratory of the Basic Research Section of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC) and belongs to the two research networks Musculoskeletal Biomechanics (MSB-Net) and Regenerative Orthopaedics (NRO) and is also a certified network laboratory.
The research laboratory is divided into the Departments:
- Biomechanics/Kinematics
- Biomaterials
- Institute for Orthopaedic Movement Diagnostics (OrthoGO)
- Clinical Study Management

Lower Saxony Centre for Biomedical Engineering, Implant Research and Development (NIFE)
The Orthopaedic Clinical Department of the MHH is represented by another research facility in the Lower Saxony Centre for Biomedical Engineering, Implant Research and Development (NIFE). The new building of the center is located at Stadtfelddamm and bundles the interdisciplinary implant research of the Hannover Medical School (MHH), the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover Foundation (TiHo) and the Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) in cooperation with the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH).
The research facility is located in the field of biohybrids, biocompatibility and biodegradation at NIFE and consists of two working groups:
- Graded Implants and Regenerative Strategies in the Skeletal System
- Biodegradable and bioactive orthopaedic implants
