Prof. Dr. Dietmar Böthig studied Human Medicine in Turin, Homburg/Saar and Würzburg, then worked for several years in the surgical departments of the Heart Centre North Rhine-Westphalia and Bad Oeynhausen Hospital before moving to the MHH (Clinical Department of Paediatric Cardiology and Intensive Care Medicine, headed by Prof. Dr. Ph. Beerbaum, and Cardiac, Thoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery, then headed by Prof. Dr. Dr. A. Haverich) in 2003. He became a surgeon in 1997, completed the part-time "Medical Informatics" course in 2001 and became a Master of Science in Biometrics in 2010 after also completing a part-time course at the University of Heidelberg. He was appointed associate professor in 2011 and has been an adjunct professor at Hannover Medical School since 2023.
The focus of his work at the MHH is the development, supervision and evaluation of clinical databases, which are used to collect patient experiences in order to present them in a clear and comparative form. This makes it easier to objectively distinguish between more positive and less recommendable treatment procedures. Diligent doctoral students make a large number of such studies possible. His preferred subject areas include heart valve replacement and other treatment procedures for patients with congenital and acquired heart diseases. He is also successfully involved in epidemiological approaches such as analyzing data from health insurance companies or the Register for Congenital Heart Defects.
Current scientific projects that he is involved in or has initiated include the EU-funded ESPOIR and ARISE studies on the introduction of a new generation of heart valves that are expected to grow with the patient, and a longitudinal study of patients in the registry for patients with congenital heart defects - those with pulmonary valve replacement.
Prof. Dr. Dr. Böthig is a member of the German Society for Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery, where he is a statistical co-editor, as well as other national and international professional societies.
