Research in the Clinical Department of Pneumology and Infectious Diseases
The Clinical Department of Pneumology and Infectious Diseases has various research focuses, maintains a separate Department of Experimental Pneumology and is a founding member of the German Center for Lung Research (DZL ). A list of publications by Prof. Dr. med. Marius M. Hoeper can be found here and a list of publications by the department can be found here. Further research activities of the DZL can be found on the website DZL/BREATH - Publications. In addition, we participate in various clinical studies. The Clinical Department of Pneumology and Infectious Diseases has the following research focuses and working groups
- German Center for Lung Research (DZL) Hannover site BREATH
- Department of Experimental Pneumology
- Molecular Pneumology
- Data Science, Statistics and Bioinformatics Working Group of the German Center for Lung Research
- Lung Research Group of the Institute of Pathology
- Pneumological Infectiology
- BonHanZA ARDS Studygroup
- Fibrosing Lung Diseases
- Translational Lung Disease Study Group
- Study Center of the Clinical Department of Pneumology and Infectious Diseases
- Respiratory diseases (bronchial asthma, COPD, allergic rhinitis)
- Cardiopulmonary interactions (pulmonary hypertension)
- Lung transplants
The Clinical Department of Pneumology is dedicated to researching the development mechanisms of allergies and respiratory diseases and improving their treatment options together with the nearby Fraunhofer Institute of Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (ITEM).

In the Department of Clinical Airway Research at Fraunhofer ITEM, a team of pulmonologists and allergists, nurses, physicists, medical-technical assistants and biomedical documentalists conduct controlled clinical studies with healthy volunteers and patients with respiratory diseases. The newly built Clinical Research Center (CRC) on the premises of the Fraunhofer Institute enables more clinical trials in the early phases of drug research, in which study participants are intensively monitored and can stay at the center for several days. An imaging center, a biobank and a GCP-compliant biomarker laboratory at the CRC allow for the investigation and development of innovative drug targets in clinical trials. In addition to investigating the efficacy and safety of new drugs, the impact of inhaled pollutants in the environment and at the workplace on the respiratory tract is also researched. All methods of modern pneumological and allergological functional diagnostics are available. In addition, special inhalation provocation procedures are possible, for example studies in a pollen provocation room. Bronchoscopic examinations and the non-invasive collection of examination material from the lungs are the focus of research activities. Clinical research is complemented by preclinical working groups on physiology, immunology and allergology, which work on the pathophysiology and pathobiology of allergic and inflammatory respiratory diseases in animal models in vivo and in vitro.
