“Camping for Organ Donation” 2026: Information tour through Northern Germany starts in June

An informational tour to raise awareness about organ donation and encourage personal decision-making will visit the MHH on Saturday, June 6, Organ Donation Day.

From June 1 to June 6, 2026, the MHH transplant coordinators from the Hannover Medical School (MHH) will once again be on the road in northern Germany with the “Camping for Organ Donation” information campaign. Organized by the Netzwerk der Transplantationsbeauftragten Region NORD e.V., the tour aims to provide the public with accessible information about organ donation and encourage them to make personal decisions. “Many people are generally open to the idea, but have not yet made or documented their decision. This is where we come in with reliable information and direct dialogue,” says Dr. Frank Logemann, MHH transplant coordinator.

Continued High Need for Information

Current data continues to show a clear need for information: While around 60 percent of adults say they have considered the issue of organ donation, only about 40 percent have documented their decision. At the same time, only about half feel sufficiently informed—objective surveys show that the actual level of knowledge is often much lower.

Dialogue-oriented information initiative

The information campaign deliberately focuses on direct interaction: Six mobile info campers bring medical expertise into public spaces—including city centers, Clinical Departments, schools, and events. Transplant coordinators and patients are on site to talk, answer questions, and support individuals in their decision-making.

Documenting Decisions and Relieving the Burden on Family Members

A central goal of the initiative is to encourage conversations within one’s personal circle. In the absence of a documented decision, relatives are often called upon to represent the presumed will in an emergency. The campaign aims to help reduce uncertainty and encourage documentation, for example in the organ donor registry.

Stops and Program Highlights

The tour wards include Cloppenburg, Wilhelmshaven, Nienburg, Helmstedt, Papenburg, Leer, Oldenburg, Bremen, Hamburg, Hanover, Bremerhaven, Gifhorn, and St. Peter-Ording. The program is supplemented by target-group-specific formats, including school events, expert dialogues, and public information sessions.

Organ Donation Day at the MHH

The tour concludes on National Organ Donation Day on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at locations including the MHH. At 10:30 a.m., the parade will arrive at the Children’s Hospital. At an information booth during the MHH Children’s Hospital summer festival (Building K10), interested visitors can learn about organ donation. The Streetbunnys are organizing a colorful program for young patients: they will play with the children and hand out balloons that can be decorated with personal wishes and pictures.

In the afternoon, another information booth featuring a wheel-of-fortune raffle in the entrance hall of the inpatient building (K6) will provide information on organ donation.

Widespread support from facilities or institutions in the north

The “Camping for Organ Donation” campaign has established itself as an integral part of educational outreach in recent years. Numerous facilities or institutions, including the MHH, contribute their professional expertise and support the implementation of the tour.
