Hannover Medical School (MHH) and Region Hannover are joining forces: on 16 September 2025, both parties signed a written memorandum of understanding in the areas of research, teaching, continuing education and training, which was signed by MHH President Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner and Regional President Steffen Krach.
In planning: Competence Centre for Public Health, Primary Health Care and Health Services Research
The aim is to sustainably expand and strengthen the already good cooperation between Region Hannover and MHH. Joint lectures, conferences and research projects are planned. The focus is on closely integrating public health services in the Hanover Region with university content at the MHH in order to transfer scientific findings directly into practice and health care systems. In addition, it is planned that Region Hannover will become a cooperation partner of the newly established Centre of Excellence for Public Health, Primary Health Care and Health Services Research at the MHH, with the prospect of further concrete steps after the centre has been established.
Meaningfully integrating healthcare, research and teaching
MHH President Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner: "With the new Centre of Excellence for Public Health, Primary Health Care and Health Services Research, the MHH is following the recommendation of the Science Council that university medicine should play an even stronger role in regional and supraregional networks for shaping healthcare in the future. This networking requires strong partnerships in research, teaching and healthcare. To this end, we are pooling our expertise at MHH and combining it with cooperation partners outside MHH. I am therefore particularly pleased to be able to sign the letter of intent today with Regional President Mr Krach to network our centre of excellence with the public health service."
Regional President Steffen Krach: ‘It is our common goal to further improve the health of our citizens. That is why it is important that Region Hannover and MHH, as two very large players in the regional healthcare system, now work even more closely together. This will enable us to meaningfully integrate healthcare, research and teaching.’
Goal: Improving people's health
The cooperation between the two partners is intended to strengthen the links between the teaching, research and practice network of the public health service (ÖGD) and the MHH. The learning and research field is to be further established as a bridge between practice and theory in order to improve the health of people in the Hanover region. In addition, training, further education and continuing professional development in the field of public health services and public health are to be significantly optimised.
Background: Region Hannover established the ‘Teaching and Research Health Office’ (LFGA) on 1 July 2024. With it as a link to science, the pillar of ‘teaching and research’ in the public health service is to be further expanded and consolidated. Region Hannover thus followed the recommendations of the advisory board of the ÖGD pact.
