Professor Manns honoured for his life's work

MHH President receives "Lifetime Achievement Award" from United European Gastroenterology (UEG)

Great honour for Professor Manns: The association "United European Gastroenterology" (UEG) today honoured the President of Hannover Medical School (MHH) for his life's work. The UEG is the European umbrella organisation for all national and European specialist societies for liver, stomach and intestinal diseases ("Digestive Health") and a leading voice in global gastroenterology and hepatology. Professor Manns will receive the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award for his life’s work "I feel very honoured. This award means a lot to me," said the MHH President.

Professor Manns is considered one of Europe's leading liver researchers. He has published more than 1,000 articles in international peer-reviewed journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, Nature, Nature Medicine, Cell, Gastroenterology and Hepatology. For the past eight years, he has been continuously listed as one of the world's most cited researchers ("Highly Cited Researchers") by the US company Clarivate Analytics. He has received numerous awards, including the International Hans Popper Award and the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) Recognition Award. He is an honorary member of numerous national and international professional societies. Professor Manns' research focuses on liver diseases with the topics viral hepatitis, autoimmune diseases of the liver, hepatocellular carcinoma, transplantation and regenerative medicine.

Professor Manns has been MHH President and Head of Research and Teaching since 2019. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, Austria, and the University of Mainz before continuing his clinical and scientific training at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Mainz. He is a specialist in internal medicine and was appointed Professor of Medicine at the University of Mainz in 1986. From 1987 to 1988, he was a research associate at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, in La Jolla, California (USA). For 29 years, he was Director of the MHH Clinic for Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology from 1991 to 2020 and was Clinical Director of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig and Founding Director of the Centre for Individualised Infection Medicine (CiiM) in Hannover from 2015 to 2018. From 2015 to 2020, he was a member of the Scientific Panel for Health (SPH) of the European Commission in Brussels.

Professor Manns is founder and chair of HepNet, a national competence network on viral hepatitis and the German Liver Foundation, and co-chair of the EASL Lancet Commission on Liver Diseases in Europe. His involvement with national and European societies ranges from positions such as President of the German Society of Gastroenterology (DGVS), the German Society for the Study of the Liver (GASL) and the German Society of Internal Medicine (DGIM). At European level, he was a member of the Scientific Committee and President of United European Gastroenterology from 2016 to 2017.
