Application for a second degree
Anyone who has already completed a degree at a German university and would like to pursue a second undergraduate degree for certain reasons - whether professional or scientific - can only be admitted as part of a special quota. You can find more information on applications for a second degree in human medicine or dentistry on the Hochschulstart website.
Information on the application procedure for the Bachelor's degree course in Midwifery Science can be found here.
Further information on second degrees
The application for a study place for a second degree is also made via Hochschulstart. You must also submit the required documents there. Further information can be found on the Hochschulstart website.
In addition to the application to Hochschulstart, an application for an expert opinion is required for applications for academic reasons. You must apply to the university that you have indicated as your highest preference in Hochschulstart. You can also find more information on this on the Hochschulstart website.
Please send the documents required for the assessment together with the application to the Student Office of MHH. In the event of later enrollment, original degree certificates can then be submitted.
In addition to professional reasons, you can also use scientific reasons. However, you can only claim the latter when applying for a double degree program if you have already carried out intensive research on a specific topic, i.e. beyond your first degree and thesis. The mere desire to conduct research on a specific topic is not sufficient.
Please submit the documents for the expert opinion by application to the MHH Student Office.
Please submit the following documents for your application for a second degree on scientific grounds:
- Letter of motivation (2 - 3 pages)
- Letter of recommendation from the research supervisor
- Proof of successful completion of the first degree program
- List of publications/awards/conference contributions (if available)
- Proof of doctorate (if available)
All documents submitted should focus on why the second degree is necessary for professional reasons in order to be able to continue the existing research work.
Please keep your documents as concise as possible. It is not necessary to submit complete publications or similar.
Please submit the application for an expert opinion via our web form by June 15 for the following winter semester.
Information on the application for the second degree in a study programme of the central allocation procedure can be found here.
For information on the application for a second degree in the Bachelor's degree program in Midwifery Science, please contact the program coordinator. You can find more information here.
If you have already obtained your first degree at the MHH, a simple copy is sufficient. However, we will need the original again for any subsequent enrollment.
Unfortunately, we cannot provide any information on the chances of obtaining a place at the MHH.
Hochschulstart will not forward your application documents to us. You must send the required documents separately to the individual departments.
For the preparation of the expert opinion, we accept either documents issued in English or certified translations in German or English. A simple translation is sufficient.
You must clarify with the state examination office responsible for you whether courses you have already completed can be credited. You can apply to this office for the recognition of credits from a previous degree course for the degree course you are applying for.
If you have already completed a degree in Germany, the criteria for re-admission to a degree program with restricted admission are very strict. Restricted admission always means that there are more prospective students than places.
As a rule, the vast majority of these prospective students have not yet had the opportunity to qualify for a profession by studying in Germany. However, these people have a fundamental right to do so, which arises from Article 12 of the Basic Law. In the case of a second degree applicant, however, this entitlement has already been fulfilled. Exceptions: The desired profession requires the completion of two study programmes (second degree for professional reasons).
Due to the limited study place capacities, admission to a second degree therefore automatically means that another applicant must be denied a study place and the entitlement under Art. 12 of the Basic Law cannot be fulfilled for this person. This restriction of another person's fundamental rights is therefore associated with high requirements, which is why the requirements for justifying a second degree are also high.
You are a licensed physician:
First section of the dental examination
According to § 29 (2) of the ZApprO: To register for the first section of the dental examination, you only need to provide proof of successful participation in the internships "Propaedeutics in Dentistry with a focus on Preventive Dentistry" and "Propaedeutics in Dentistry with a focus on Dental Technology". The other courses from the first stage of your studies will be credited to you.
If these two internships "Propaedeutics in dentistry with a focus on preventive dentistry" and "Propaedeutics in dentistry with a focus on dental technology" take place in direct succession in the 1st and 2nd semester or in the 3rd and 4th semester, you can shorten the first section of the dentistry degree from two years to one year in the best case scenario. Otherwise, it is not possible to shorten the first section of the dental examination.
Second section of the dental examination
Licensed physicians must also complete the internships "Dental Conservation on the Phantom", "Dental Prosthetics on the Phantom", "Orthodontic Propaedeutics and Prophylaxis" and "Dental-Surgical Propaedeutics and Emergency Medicine" planned for the second section of the dental degree course. It is therefore not possible for licensed physicians to shorten the study period in the second stage of the dental degree course.
Third section of the dental examination
According to § 20 (4) sentence 2 of the ZApprO, licensed physicians are exempted from numerous subjects in the third stage of their studies. The only cross-sectional areas for which licensed physicians must enclose proof of successful participation with their application for admission to the third section of the dental examination are "QB Medicine and Dentistry of Ageing" and "QB Clinical Materials Science". However, this is unlikely to shorten your studies, as these theoretical subjects are taught in parallel to the practical patient-based training, for example in orthodontics, dental diseases, radiology and the "Integrated Treatment Courses I to IV".
In the third section of the dental examination, licensed physicians do not have to take the written part of the examination in accordance with Section 59 (2).
