Katharina van Baal has been a research associate at the Institute of General Medicine and Palliative Medicine since July 2018. In the OPAL and Polite projects, she has worked on the optimization and further development of palliative care in general practice and in the Quincie project on inpatient palliative care. In addition to end-of-life care, Katharina van Baal is also working on the effects of climate change on health ( ADAPT-HEAT project) and the evaluation of a new cross-sector, short-stay, general medicine-oriented form of care ( STATAMED project). Since the beginning of 2024, she has been working in the team of the W2 professorship for health services research in the areas of research and teaching.
From 2011 to 2017, Katharina van Baal studied physiotherapy (B. Sc.) and evidence-based health care (M. Sc.) at the Bochum University of Applied Sciences. Between 2014 and 2018, she worked as a physiotherapist. From 2017 to 2018, she was also a research associate at the Department of General Health Sciences in the physiotherapy study programmes at the Bochum University of Applied Sciences.
In May 2022, Katharina van Baal completed her doctorate at the Institute ofGeneral Medicine and Palliative Medicine on the topic of "Analysis of the care situation of people at the end of life in Lower Saxony using data from a statutory health insurance company and routine and survey data from general practitioners". The methodological focus of her work is the analysis of routine data from statutory health insurance, routine GP data and survey data as well as the development and consensus of recommendations for improving care.
