PD Dr. med. Kambiz Afshar, MME

Head of Teaching

Kambiz Afshar studied Human Medicine at Hannover Medical School (MHH) from 2006 to 2012 and obtained his doctorate in the Clinical Department of Neurology in 2013.

Since 2013, Mr. Afshar has been working as a physician and research associate at the Institute of General Medicine and Palliative Medicine at the MHH and heads the teaching department.

From 2013 to 2015, Mr. Afshar completed his inpatient training in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and in Clinical Departments of the Center for Internal Medicine at MHH. Since 2016, he has been providing general medical care to patients in the Central Emergency Room at MHH.

As a clinician scientist, Mr. Afshar is dedicated to teaching and learning research projects as well as research projects related to general practitioner and palliative care. A long-standing focus of his work has been the development, testing and implementation of a suitable instrument for the early identification of patients who can benefit from palliative care.

Mr. Afshar has been involved in the training of medical students as a clinical educator since the beginning of his medical career. In recent years, he has received the Young Teachers' Award and teaching prizes several times for his teaching activities. In addition to teaching, his main areas of focus include the didactic development of general medical and palliative medicine teaching as well as the redesign of curricular offerings on student health and professionalization in medical studies.

From 2017 to 2019, Mr. Afshar completed the part-time Master of Medical Education (MME-D) study programmes at Heidelberg University, which he successfully completed in summer 2020.

In October 2021, he received the Venia legendi for "General Medicine". The title of his habilitation thesis is "Systematic development and testing of a decision aid for the clinical assessment of seriously ill and dying people in general practice".

From 2021 to 2024, he completed his outpatient training in a GP group practice in Hanover and then successfully passed the examination to become a specialist in general medicine.

In January 2025, Mr. Afshar was appointed senior physician at the Institute ofGeneral Medicine and Palliative Medicine.

In April 2025, he was appointed as a member of the medical expert commission at the Institute for Medical and Pharmaceutical Examination Questions (IMPP) for a period of three years.
