Improving the care of patients with incurable diseases: Analysis of the stock of and need for palliative care day clinics and day hospices and recommendations for care planning
Background
Hospice and palliative care for people with incurable, progressive illnesses has developed significantly in recent years, both in the inpatient and outpatient sector. This can be seen, for example, in the number of palliative care units, hospices, hospice services and specialized outpatient palliative care (SAPV) services available. A needs-based, patient-oriented overall concept for hospice and palliative care also includes palliative care day clinics and day hospices. In Germany, these day services are not defined by social legislation and have so far been initiated individually from care practice. It is therefore assumed that these day services have very heterogeneous structures and are developing unsystematically in the care landscape.
Objectives
The objectives of the ABPATITE project are
- To record the current stock of palliative care day clinics and day hospices in Germany and to analyze these facilities or Institutions in detail,
- to obtain an assessment of the needs of outpatient and inpatient hospice and palliative care providers.
The project focuses on the preferences of patients and their relatives for end-of-life care in order to assess the importance of palliative care day services from the perspective of those affected.
In the course of the project, recommendations for the future needs-based development and expansion of palliative care day clinics and day hospices in Germany will be developed as part of an implementation workshop and a consensus process.
Recommendations for palliative care day clinics and day hospices
Recommendations for the future establishment and expansion of palliative care day clinics and day hospices in Germany were developed from the results of the project and agreed by experts from hospice work and palliative care throughout Germany. The agreed recommendations are available to download here in the form of a brochure. A printed version of the brochure can also be sent by post on request. In this case, please send an e-mail with your address and the number of copies you would like to receive to Glizner.Alexandra@mh-hannover.de.

Funding
The project is funded by the Innovation Fund of the Joint Federal Committee for the area of health services research (funding reference 01VSF19034). The funding period runs from 01.04.2020 to 30.09.2022.
In the long term, the project results should contribute to the patient-oriented further development of care. The integration of day services into outpatient and inpatient hospice and palliative care is to be promoted.
