Primary care for trans people in Lower Saxony: Using health care data, experiences with care, and participatory approaches to enhance medical care and medical education

Background

Trans* people often face particular challenges when accessing healthcare services, ranging from the treatment and therapy of gender dysphoria to mental health issues and health concerns related to gender reassignment, which can vary depending on the stage of life. Outpatient providers play a central role in the treatment and management of many of these health issues. While there is international evidence of deficiencies in care and barriers to access for trans* people, little is known about the situation and experiences of trans* people in and with German primary care.

Aims

  1. To record care-related experiences, needs and expectations of trans* people
  2. Identification of the use of specific care services by trans* people and of treatment pathways
  3. Recording the experiences of general practitioners, pediatricians and obstetrics/gynecology specialists in the care of trans* people
  4. Recording of care-related experiences, needs and expectations of relatives and loved ones of trans* people
  5. Identification of gaps in medical curricula with regard to the care of trans* people
  6. Derivation and consensus of recommendations for action
