Through the student's eyes
On October 19, 2019, former MHH students celebrated their silver jubilee at Examen25. The event, organized by MHH-Alumni e.V., had a number of highlights in store, from campus tours and a ceremony to a final dinner together.
There were more alumni than ever before this year: 115 former students returned to their alma mater 25 years after graduating in Human medicine. The number of students working on their behalf was also higher than ever before: 14 young men and women who are currently studying Human medicine at the MHH gave the returning alumni a tour of the campus and gave them the opportunity to discover new things and see old familiar ones again. In the Skills Lab, Central Laboratory and HAINS, the focus was not only on technology and equipment, but above all on the exchange between the different generations of students. And because this is obviously fun both ways, the jobs as so-called executives are very popular.
Adriana Wilczek led a group around the MHH campus for the first time in 2016 during her studies in Human medicine. Since then, she has been there almost every time. And although she has now completed her studies and works as an investigator in clinical research, she has remained loyal to the small part-time job: "It's nice to experience this special joy of reunion. And I get to meet great people every time and learn interesting stories. That's why the job is always fun, even after years."
Shadi Kedah has been one of the "executives" since 2017. He came to Germany from Syria as a refugee in 2014, completed a short nursing course in Berlin and has been studying Human medicine at the MHH since 2016. Like the other students, he normally says goodbye after the guided tours and before the ceremony. On this October day, however, he stayed because he had prepared a small performance for the alumni. "Migrationsvordergrund" was the title of his stand-up comedy performance, in which he talked about cultural differences and the pitfalls of everyday life.
The young student was also visibly interested in the other items on the program. He listened to Professor Ingo Just, Dean of Studies, talk about studying at the MHH today. He smiled at the anecdotes told by Professor Reinhard Pabst, who will be celebrating his 50th anniversary next year. He swayed along to the music of his fellow student Jan-Marc Bleck, who took a trip back in time to the 1994 exam year with his guitar and vocals. He listened attentively to the speech by graduate Dr. Matthias Berndt, who, in a critical look at today's healthcare system, had a central appeal for his former fellow students: "25 years after graduation, it is the turn of all of us sitting here to be medical role models, be it in medical practices, in clinics or in other fields of activity." And Shadi Kedah applauded the alumni as they accepted their anniversary certificates from Professor Just one after the other. The young Syrian only said goodbye shortly before dinner, where the alumni ended the day in a relaxed atmosphere.
Adriana Wilczek is already looking forward to her own graduation anniversary: "It's already a bit nostalgic for me to see the rooms from my first year of study again. How will I feel after 25 years?" Shadi Kedah feels the same way. He is particularly looking forward to finding out what has become of his fellow students in the meantime. When asked where he will probably be coming from, Shadi Kedah replied with a twinkle in his eye: "I won't be returning to MHH, because I'm going to stay here and work and then come over." It would be nice if that worked out!
