After all, hybrid

Professor Piepenbrock welcomed the guests in lecture hall F.

On July 3, 2021, the MHH Alumni e.V. organized the Human Medicine graduation ceremony as a hybrid format with around 40 graduates and their families on site in lecture hall F and around 70 participants who followed the livestream at home on their tablets or smartphones. When the graduation ceremony had to be held as an online event for the first time in January 2021, MHH President Michael P. Manns had hoped that it would be a one-off event. But unfortunately, the coronavirus could not be shaken off just in time for the summer graduation ceremony. "For a long time, it looked as if we would also have to hold this event exclusively online," says Katrin Fuchs from the MHH Alumni e.V. team. "But when it became clear that we would be able to welcome at least some of the graduates in the lecture hall, we organized the hybrid version relatively spontaneously." Admission control with proof of vaccination, test or recovery and compulsory masks up to the seat were willingly accepted by the guests in order to experience this special moment together.

Marie Mikuteit gave the graduation speech.

It was also clear to Professor Siegfried Piepenbrock, Chairman of the MHH Alumni Association, that he was more comfortable greeting a partially full audience than speaking in front of empty rows of seats. Dean of Studies Professor Ingo Just was unfortunately unable to be there in person, but congratulated the newly graduated colleagues and their families warmly in a video message. Graduate Marie Mikuteit recalled the official (and secret) highlights of studying medicine at the MHH in apt anecdotes, before MHH President Michael P. Manns read out the names of all the graduates after a brief reminiscence of his own time as a student.

MHH student and concert pianist (!) Johanna Doll-Lee set the musical tone for the event, creating a festive and relaxed atmosphere with light-footed piano sounds. At the end of the livestream, the focus was once again on the guests at the screens as the people in the hall waved goodbye to the participants at home. After the cameras were switched off, the Alumni Chairman and the MHH President jointly distributed the traditional graduation rose to the graduates on site. There was not yet a buffet in the usual form, but with a glass of sparkling wine, bright sunshine and plenty of fresh air, this graduation ceremony came to a successful conclusion - and was a nice start on the way back to normality.
