Management in oncology during the COVID-19 pandemic

Hanover, 03.06.2020

The proposed research project "OnCoVID - Management in oncology during the COVID-19 pandemic - ethical, legal and health economic implications" was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The project runs as a cooperation with Leibniz University under the leadership of the CCC Hannover in the period from July 2020 to December 2021.

Background

Cancer treatment decision-making during the COVID-19 pandemic is characterized not only by limited resources and prioritization of acute treatments, but also by multidimensional effects on treatment algorithms, long-term outcomes and clinical process management. In this context, the complexity of cancer treatment requires specific considerations on ethical and medico-legal aspects during the pandemic.

Aims of the project

The project aims to develop data-based decision guidelines for oncology care in the context of pandemics. To this end, a comprehensive assessment of ethical and medico-legal aspects will be carried out. This will be used to provide a checklist for oncology care management during a pandemic and to develop guidelines for this type of decision-making.

The project focuses on the following questions:

  • What decision-making conflicts characterize oncology care during the COVID-19 pandemic?
  • What changes have been made to the management of oncology care during the COVID-19 pandemic? What are the potential outcomes and economic consequences for risk comparison in the clinical decision-making process?
  • What changes apply to the normative framework in clinical pandemic situations?
