Liver Center - MHH
One organ - multi-professional clinical management
Doctors from various disciplines ensure the tradition of the focus on liver diseases at Hannover Medical School:
Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Klempnauer (Center for Surgery, Clinical Department of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery), Prof. Dr. med. Claus Petersen (Center for Surgery, Clinical Department of Paediatric Surgery), Prof. Dr. med. Heiner Wedemeyer (Clinical Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology), Prof. Dr. med. Ulrich Baumann (Center for Paediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Clinical Department of Paediatric Kidney, Liver and Metabolic Diseases, Focus Professorship for Paediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology), Prof. Dr. med. Frank Wacker (Radiology Centre, Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology) work closely with other medical departments on an interdisciplinary basis to develop and optimize the diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases in all age groups.Patients of all ages with liver diseases have been treated regularly at the MHH since it was founded more than 50 years ago. Acute and chronic liver inflammation of various causes and its complications, such as liver cirrhosis and liver cancer, have all played an important role at the Liver Center for many years.
Our aim is to keep the liver healthy or make it healthy again
Outstanding examples of the capabilities of the MHH Liver Center in the service of patients are the treatment of chronic infections with hepatitis viruses, the long tradition of liver transplantation in adults and children, the performance of extensive liver resections, the diagnosis and treatment of congenital liver diseases, the diagnosis and surgery of children with biliary atresia and the targeted image-guided therapy of liver tumors.
Furthermore, rare liver diseases are also diagnosed and treated. The MHH is one of 5 German university hospitals represented in the network for rare liver diseases entitled ERN-rare liver(http://www.rare-liver.eu/), which brings together 28 centers from 11 countries. Prof. Claus Petersen in the Department of Pediatric Surgery is responsible for coordinating this reference network at the MHH.
The MHH Liver Center offers children and adults all procedures of liver and bile duct surgery, liver transplantation, hepatological treatment of acute and chronic liver diseases and liver cancer, endoscopy, sonography and interventional radiology as well as the latest procedures for genetic diagnostics of congenital liver diseases. Innovative therapy concepts such as gene therapy for monogenetically determined liver diseases are also currently being developed and established at our university.
